Charles Joseph Berry was born in Lorain on July 10, 1923. His parents were Carl and Caroline Berry. He graduated from Clearview High School in 1941 and he enlisted in the Marine Corps on October 1, 1941 (before Pearl Harbor) when he was 18 years old. Charles Berry attended basic training at Parris Island, South Carolina and was a qualified parachutist.
