Conrad Reid built a two story hotel at the corner of Broadway and Erie Ave (where the Spitzer Hotel sits currently) and lived in it with his family. It was called the Reid House and it was one of Lorain's first hotels. The hotel served many different people including the crews from the lake boats and workmen from the stove foundry. Conrad Reid was very civic minded and served as the Justice of the Peace. During the Civil War, he was appointed a U.S. Marshal. Conrad Reid died in 1883 and his hotel burned down not longer after.
