Helen Steiner Rice was born Helen Elaine Steiner on May 19, 1900, here in Lorain. Her parents were born in 1872 on farms near Wooster, Ohio. The family lived in a house on Lexington Avenue before moving to 2714 Reid Avenue. Helen attended Garden Avenue School, Garfield and Lorain High School. While attending Lorain High, she published poems in the school's Yearbook The Scimitar. She graduated in 1918 (Class A) from Lorain High.
