Toni Morrison, the Nobel Prize-winning author, was born in Lorain on February 18, 1931. She was born with the name Chloe Anthony Wofford. Her parents had moved to Ohio from the South, hoping to raise their children in an environment more friendly to blacks. She grew up in Lorain and attended Lorain High School.
