St. Joseph's Hospital

Father Bihn and the Sisters didn't mean to found a hospital, but meant to establish an extension of the St. Francis Orphan Asylum and Home for the Aged in Tiffin, Ohio and called it "St. Joseph's Institute". Doctors in Lorain had begun bringing patients to the "hospital" who were too ill to be cared for at home. Eventually, the Institute averaged 25 patients a day. The facilities were primitive. The first eye surgery was performed in 1897 on a wooden table covered with an oil cloth.
