This is a picture of a patient being loaded into an ambulance in the late 1940's. In 1944, twelve-year-old Malvin Conrad was admitted to the hospital for a "blood infection" in her left kneee. Her doctor, Taylor Smith, tried to control the infection, but by the next day she had gotten so much worse that he feared she would die. Dr. Smith rememberd that the government had recently made small amounts of a new drug called penicillin available. Soon after treatment, Malvin began to respond and was the first Lorain County resident to receive Penicillin.
