Street Cars

A long time ago, before cars and buses were used, people either walked to where they wanted to go, or, they took a streetcar. In 1887, F.B. Vernam and others started the Horse Car Line - a series of streetcars that were pulled by horses. The tracks ran from "The Loop" (where Erie Ave. meets Broadway Ave.) to 21st Street, in front of what is now the old St. Joseph's Hospital. The horse-drawn street car wasn't very fast (as fast as the horse could walk) but it was better than walking. This picture is of the car barns (where they stored the steetcars) at 18th St. and Broadway.
